I think I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with editing. I love to remake my story into something better but I hate spending hours staring at the same sentence wondering if this really is the best way of getting my point across. I also have to solve all the problem parts that I left in during the first draft because I didn’t know what to do with them. There is probably a lesson there about fixing things as you go along but I am not sure it is one I am going to learn.
One of my favourite things about the second draft is that by this stage I have a much better idea of who all my characters are and what their personality is like. I can use this information to improve my draft and give readers a better feel for the characters.
I am still learning a lot about the revisions process but I am starting to wonder if it ever feels as though a story is ‘done’. Maybe you just get to a stage where you can no longer deal with looking at the same words on the page so you push it to publish stage to escape from it.
I am hoping that I will be done with this round of edits by mid/late June which means that I could send it off to publishers while the next NaNo month is happening. That way I may just be too busy to panic check my inbox every five minutes.
